Prof. Hong Minghui

Prof. Hong Minghui specializes in laser microprocessing & nanofabrication, opticalengineering and applications. He has co-authored 10 book chapters, 26 patents granted, and 400+ scientific papers in Nature, Chemical Reviews, Nature Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Light: Science and Applications, ACS Nano, ScienceAdvances, Nature Communications, and Laser & Photonics Reviews etc. and 60+plenary/ keynote/ invited talks in international conferences. 


He is a member of organizingcommittees for Laser Precision Micromachining International Conference (2001~2018), International Symposium of Functional Materials (2005, 2007 and 2014), Chair of International Workshop of Plasmonics and Applications in Nanotechnologies (2006), Chair of Conferenceon Laser Ablation (2009) and Chair of Asia-Pacific Near-field Optics Conference (2013 and2019). 


Prof. Hong is invited to serve as an Editor of Light: Science and Applications, EditorialBoard Member of Scientific Reports, Associate Editor of Science China, Editor of LaserMicro/ nanoengineering, and Executive Editor-in-chief of Opto-Electronic Advances. He is Simon Industrial and Professional Fellow, the University of Manchester, UK; Guest Professor of Zhejiang University, University of Science & Technology of China, Xiamen University and Nanjing University of Technology as well as Visiting Professor of Institute of Optoelectronics,Chinese Academy of Sciences. 


Prof. Hong is Fellow of Optical Society of America (OSA), Fellow of International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and Founding Fellow andVice President of International Academy of Photonics and Laser Engineering (IAPLE) and Fellow of Institute of Engineers, Singapore (IES). 


Prof. Hong is currently a Full Professor and the Director of Optical Science and Engineering Centre (OSEC), Department of Electrical andComputer Engineering, National University of Singapore. He is also the Chairman of an NUS spun-off company: Phaos Technology Pte. Ltd., to commericlize NUS developed laserprecison engineering, optical imaging and laser diagnostic technologies. 

ABOUT THE TOPIC

Manufacturing capability is one important indicator of the strength of one Nation. The cost, speed and quality of the products from the manufacturing lines are closely related to everyaspect of our life. Now we are moving into the time of the internet. Big data, internet of things, artificial intelligence, and many other emerging concepts define the new challenges for ourmodern manufacturing to achieve higher accuracy, higher efficiency and higher productivity.Advanced manufacturing is the new strategy leading to the feasible solutions.


Light plays a key role on the advanced manufacturing. Being as fast as light, it provides themaximum speed allowed for rapid optical sensing and data commination. Being as accurate aslight, it offers the reliable means to fabricate current digital devices in micro- even nano-scale. Being as colourful as light, it serves as the basis for optical imaging and materials real-timecharacterization. The unique properties of light are achieving varieties of innovations and bringing about plenty of new opportunities. In this lecture, the beauty of light will be highlighted in both the scopes of high-power applications, such as laser micro-processing and nano-fabrication for thin wafer processing in production lines, femtosecond laser precision engineeringof man-made bio-skins for tissue engineering, lotus-leave-like super-hydrophobic structures and metamaterials fabrication; as well as low-power applications, including optical nano-imaging andlaser diagnostics of cracks inside steel structures and gas leakage detection. Laser cleaning of surface contaminations, Laser color marking of metal surfaces, Portable Raman spectroscope, and Optical microsphere nanoscope being developed in our laboratory will be case studied toemphasize the importance of technology commercialization for our new industries.
