Institute of Optics and Electronics (IOE) is the largest institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Southwest China. IOE pioneers the research in China in adaptive optics, super-resolution optical lithography, as well as opto-electronic measurement technologies in aeronautics and aerospace.
Adaptive optics is a novel subject to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effect of wavefront distortions and optical aberrations caused by atmospheric turbulence. It is widely applied in astronomy, medicine and laser communication systems. IOE pioneeres the research of adaptive optics and implemented adaptive optics correction and atmospheric correction for observing natural stars as well as achieved high resolution human eyes retinal imaging in vivo in China. In solar observing, IOE firstly achieved 7-band solar atmospheric tomography imaging all over the world.
In micro- and nano-optics areas, based on the investigation of the interaction between electromagnetic wave and subwavelength structures, a series of functional devices are invented and applied in plenty of fields, including lightweight imaging, optics beyond the diffraction limit, bio-medicine aeronautics and aerospace. Meanwhile, a research team in IOE proposed and demonstrated the principle and method to realize super-resolution optical lithography based on surface plasmonics in 2004. Recently, super-resolution lithography lens, systems and relevant lithography process have been developed to extend the resolution of i-line optical lithography to 22nm. It opens a brand new path towards nanoscale lithography.
In the fields of aeronautics and aerospace，relying on active and passive opto-electronic precision measurement technologies, IOE has participated and completed many important missions including lunar exploration and manned spaceflight. In the missions, IOE firstly applied Lidar to space rendezvous and docking and achieved first image of lunar surface and Yutu lunar rover in China.
Professor Liu Enhai is the Deputy Director of Institute of Optics and Electronics (IOE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is a member of The Chinese Optical Society, Chinese Society for Optical Engineering and Space Optical Engineering Expert Committee.
His main research field is “space optoelectronic precision measurement technologies”, mainly to carry out the overall design of compact lightweight space system, signal processing with high sensitivity and low noise, rapid extraction and recognition of image features, intelligent visual servo method, high dynamic performance control system, high precision imaging testing and calibration technique.
Prof. Liu servers as the Director, Chief Designer and Chief Engineer for many projects of opto-electronic precision measurement and automatic control in IOE. He has participated in and completed many important tasks funded by The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), The National Basic Research Program (973 Program), China Manned Space Programme, and China Lunar Exploration Program, respectively.
